Watch for Stalk Rot During Harvest

As we were out looking at fields before #harvest17 started, we saw issues with stalk rot and Physoderma brown spot.

This rot stops the flow of nutrients to the rest of the plant and can lead to weakened stalks and significant losses in yield. In addition, Physoderma brown spot popped up after heavy rains in the middle of the growing season, around June and July; Physoderma can lead to standability issues, but still can result in decent yields.

While it’s hard to control the weather during a growing season, careful hybrid selection can aid in next year’s success.
