I can’t think of a better way to end an agricultural marketing internship than with a farm show, and when Producers Hybrids does farm shows, they don’t mess around. Although I will admit that I’m probably biased about this, I truly think that Producers Hybrids did the best job of presenting themselves at Farmfest. We hit a home run with everything from the show plots to the sales team to the tent and displays to the free giveaways.
Thousands of people people passed through the Producers Hybrids tent and show plots, learning about some of the company’s highest performing products and talking to District Sales Managers and seed dealers along the way. Farm shows also serve as a customer appreciation event for Producers Hybrids, and throughout the week we served decadent philly cheesesteak sandwiches to over 800 happy customers.
If there is one thing that I learned after spending nearly an entire week with the same twelve people, it’s that personality styles matter. Producers Hybrids places a large emphasis on knowing yourself and your personality style. This allows you to, in turn, understand other’s personality styles and gives you the ability to work well with all types of people.
At the beginning of our internships, all ten interns took the test to determine what personality style we are. My report came back and essentially said I’m a social butterfly with a steady head. I wasn’t too surprised by this (and if you know me, I’m sure you aren’t surprised either). I didn’t think much of it at the time, but as Farmfest continued throughout the week I began to recognize how different personality styles work and the benefits of being able to recognize the positives of each personality type.
Many of the sales people are similar in personalities and they focus on creating results and place emphasis on quality. However, much of the marketing team has a social and detail-oriented personality. Being able to recognize different personality types and learning what makes different people tick helped me to realize why I’ve never been extremely interested in a sales job, and why many sales people don’t have an interest in working in marketing.
It takes all kinds of kinds to make this world go ‘round. Everyone has their own special niche and it was fun for me to be able to see everyone’s unique talents in action this week. The Producers Hybrids team works so well together and I can only hope to work at a company with such a great team atmosphere in the future.
As I finish up my final blog, I would like to say thank you to those of you who have come along with me on this crazy journey! It’s been a summer jam packed with learning experiences and memories that I will cherish forever. I’ve traveled to seven states, met hundreds of new people, made professional connections that will last me a lifetime, became good friends with nine other interns, and most importantly, learned more that I could have ever imagined! Thank you to the Producers Hybrids family for an incredible summer, I will always be #ready4more!
