Plant a Package

Bob Kleinschmit (Corn Product Manager)

In many areas, harvest is wrapped up or is getting very close to done. I think most would agree that product performance this year has been very good especially considering the year we had. We went from insufficient moisture to excessive and back to insufficient, average planting date to snow to late planting date, below average heat units to very hot temperatures resulting in average to above average heat units.

One thing I have learned in my years in the seed industry is that there is no such thing as an average year. Products that performed well last year or the prior four years may not have performed as well this year. Next year they will be back. Each year, Mother Nature will throw a curve ball that you cannot adequately plan for.

One way to help protect ourselves from the curve balls is to plant a package. Planting a package of 3-4 products with different backgrounds and maturities helps spread your risk so you can be better prepared for what Mother Nature sends your way.  Spreading out your pollination timing decreases the odds that everything will tassel in the same week, which could also be the hottest week of the year. Knowing the disease ratings and traits can help properly place a product on the correct acre. Sometimes the highest yielding product also requires the most management.

Talk to your Producers Hybrids Sales Representative and Sales Agronomist and they will help you select the right product package to maximize yields on your farm.
